One of the blessings of our school is being able to have the elementary, middle school and high school all in the same building. This year, we decided to invite the little ones in the elementary (
Pre-K through 4
th grade) to "partner" with us in our ministry to the Dominican Republic. This past week, our elementary students have been collecting items for us to take with us to give to the kids in the DR -- kids who are their own ages! We would like to give every little girl at the orphanage in Jarabacoa and at the care center in
Palo Blanco a beanie baby and every little boy a match box car. In addition to that, we are also collecting DC tshirts and polo shirts so that we can give one of those to each child too. Our elementary students (as well as many others in the school) have really stepped up and my classroom is quickly getting filled with lots and lots of stuff! I can't wait to get all of our duffel bags packed with all of our goodies....and then get them to the DR!!
In addition to collecting items for the Dominican children, nine of the elementary classes have "adopted" our DR team and have promised to pray for us daily while we are gone. (The other elementary classes "adopted" the Jamaica and France teams who will also be ministering out of the country during J-Term.) Today we spent about a half hour with each of our elementary classes in their classrooms so that they could meet us in person, learn about the Dominican Republic, watch a slide show of pictures from last year's trip (so they could "meet" some of the orphan children), learn a song in Spanish...and most of all, pray for us and our ministry in the DR. It was a sweet moment sharing this time with the elementary kids. How wonderful it is to be able to share a part of our ministry with them...and how wonderful that they can learn about missions at such a young age.
