The guys were split into two groups doing two different work projects. Josh and five Logos guys worked at the day care center smoothing out the concrete roof so that it can be ready to be painted. Jon, Mason, Tyran, Mr. Farmer and three Logos boys were doing work to the home of one of the single moms in the community. Today they dug footers so that a bathroom and a kitchen can be added to the three room 240 square foot house. This single mom lives in this very small house with her two kids, two other adults plus three other children.
The girls all worked at El Arca. Bethany, Sarah, Lauren & Brianna sorted and organized all the things that we brought for the kids (beanie babies, hotwheels, coloring book, flip flops, and craft supplies.) LaRisa & Gabbey spent the day moving large pieces of wood that will be used to make wooden benches. Jennica & Shayla cleaned and organized a woodshop. Darian, Kelli, Jaclyn, Erika, Jenna sanded and varnished bunkbeds in some of the kids rooms. Devin & Christina started digging a trench for a water pipe that leads to one of the homes.
Our childrens ministry took place at El Arca. We started with singing songs together (including “the crocodile song” that I often sing with my students) and then the drama and mime teams performed. The mime team performed to the song “Because Of Who You Are.” This is a very significant song to our team because from it represents the theme of our ministry with the kids this week. The song describes three names of God: Jehovah Jireh, Jehovah Nissi and Jehovah Shalom. Our theme for today was “Jehovah Jirah” which means “God, my provider.” For that reason, the drama team performed a skit about the “feeding of the 5,000.” Our crafts reflected the theme as well. The older kids colored and glittered little paper fishies and the younger kids made macaroni necklaces. All in all, I would have to say that our first ministry day went really well and we had a great time. We ended our time with the kids today blasting Spanish praise music and running around laughing, playing, dancing, etc. It was a great day!
I had an opportunity to speak with the director of the Kids Alive ministry here in the DR. Victor confirmed that their organization has been asked to take in 50 Haitian orphans. Ten of those children will be coming to El Arca, possibly sometime this week. The rest of them will be split between the three other childrens homes that are here in the DR. There are several Haitian churches here in the area, so at least here at El Arca, they will bring in some of the adults from those churches so that they will be able to speak with the Haitian children (who speak creole) and help them get adjusted. We as a team have decided to give the flip flops that our fourth grade classes back home donated to the Haitian orphan children who will be coming to the DR. In addition to that, Jenna’s mom (who is a dentist) donated lots of toothbrushes and we will giving those to the Haitian children as well.
So, as you can see, it’s been a great ministry day for us today…and we still have several more days of it! Please be praying for energy for the team, continued good health, beautiful weather, increased courage for my students to use their Spanish with the kids, and for opportunities to share the love of Christ with anyone we come in contact with this week. I look forward to telling you how things progress as the week goes on.
